The first and most important step... the logo.
It's proudly displayed on the sign on your building, your website, your business card, and all of your other marketing materials. This is the cornerstone of your business. You can't afford to get it wrong because so much of your business success is built upon it. You need it to separate you from the pack. You need your logo to tell people in a glance what your business does, and that it's a quality business that's worth taking the time to look at further. A well designed and strategic logo can do that. It will cause your potential clients or customers to get such a positive feeling about your business, simply based on that first impression, that they will have to know more about you. In fact, they're already envisioning a positive working relationship with you before they even take the next step. That's the power of a quality logo.
On the other hand, a poorly designed logo will convey poor quality to them (no matter how high quality your actual business is) and send them moving on to one of your competitors in an instant. I've seen start-ups take this step lightly and do it themselves or hire a high school kid to create a logo for a small fee. They take a shortcut here and end up with a logo that, at best, sells their business short and, at worst, is frankly an embarrassing first impression.
